White Water Rafting

you’re white water rafting

careening off into a waterfall, into a deep blue lake

touching the very bottom, feeling the smooth pebbles with your toes

look how long I can hold my breath!

blue and green and gold crescendo

the sun shattering and rippling out

dappling within the water

creating portals of light

slipping through the current, naturally

shooting up, gasping for breath

breathing in the shock of joy

resting on a rock in the sun and

you smile

as the sweet music you’ve dreamed of

swells in the distance

but

climbing out and scraping your knee

as you settle on the edge

letting the tender, quiet feeling of leaving wash over you

“this is not your home,” the music whispers behind you.
